10cm Globe Terrarium

Please note that the terrariums cannot be posted due to their delicate nature. Collection from the workshop in Worcester city centre (WR1) or delivery within a 10-mile radius for a rate of £5 is available. Please contact for further information

I choose to plant the Globe Terrariums with aquatic plants because they are naturally miniature and slow growing. Aquatic plants can be grown emersed (out of water) so long as the humidity levels are high and a terrarium provides the perfect environment.

The moss used is a mixture of Vesicularia dubyana (christmas moss) and Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java moss), both of which can grow submerged or emersed. Given time, the moss will grow over the substrate, rocks and branches in the terrarium and will need occasional pruning. The moss isn’t overly fussy but will benefit from additional lighting

Bucephaladra is a rheophilic plant endemic to Borneo where it forms dense mats over rocks in fast flowing rivers and streams. It is tolerant of low light levels and thrives in the humidity of a terrarium. A rheophilic plant is an aquatic plant that lives in fast moving water currents in an environment where few other organisms can survive. There are over 30 types of Bucephaladra but my favorites are ‘mini needle leaf’ and ‘mini red’. Bucephalandra grows from a rhizome and can be divided by cutting the rhizome into smaller sections.

Anubias is an aquatic/semi-aquatic plant native to Cameroon and Nigeria. The genus is named after the Egyptian God of the afterlife, Anubis, because they are found in shaded environments. I prefer to use Anubias ‘pangolino’ which is the smallest of the genus. It grows extremely slowly, requires little maintenance and fits perfectly in both the 8 and 10cm Globe Terrariums.

While all of the plants I use in the Globe Terrariums are tolerant of low light levels, they will benefit from additional lighting. The sunlight in their native countries is far too strong but a grow light provides the ideal amount. I use the Ikea VAXER 10w grow bulb in a standard lamp which will cover an area of 30x30cm.

PLEASE NOTE that the terrarium you will receive will differ from the one pictured.

Bucephalandra ‘mini needle leaf’ or Anubias ‘pangolino’.

Vesicularia dubyana (moss).

Place in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight.

The plants are shade tolerant but will grow better in a bright spot or with additional lighting.

You can leave the cork in but it’s a good idea to open it up once a day for an hour or two to let some air in. Once the plants are more established, the cork can be left out for longer periods of time but be sure to keep an eye on it so the plants don’t dry out.

The substrate should be constantly moist but no puddles should form if the glass is tilted. You can remove any excess water with a pipette.

Occasional misting with chamomile tea helps to prevent mold due to its naturally occurring anti-fungal properties

I offer a guarantee that if the plants should fail then I will replace them for free so long as reasonable care was taken and the instructions I provided were followed. For plants to be replaced the terrarium must be brought to my workshop.

PLEASE NOTE – These terrariums will have recently been planted so won’t look quite as full as in the picture. The moss and plants need space and time to grow and will look like the picture in around 8 weeks.
